Reformation Month: Why Celebrate it?

This month, we are celebrating 507 years of the Protestant Reformation. You may not be familiar with the Protestant Reformation, but this was a movement that not only reshaped the church but also influenced society at large. Many of the social values and norms we consider "normal" today are part of the legacy of this movement.

Above all, the Reformation was vital for the church because it restored foundational biblical principles. One of its cornerstone principles was Sola Scriptura—Latin for "Scripture Alone." By reaffirming the Bible as the church's sole infallible and ultimate authority, the Reformation corrected many theological errors and abuses that had accumulated over centuries.

As people began to rediscover biblical truth, they also rediscovered the true Gospel. In this sense, the Reformation was fundamentally a Gospel movement. It was not merely an intellectual debate, as some might think, but the power of God for salvation at work, bringing about spiritual regeneration (new birth) for many.

So, celebrating the Reformation is celebrating the Gospel. It is celebrating the triumph of light over darkness and God's grace, which uses broken people to accomplish great things through the power of His Spirit.

Praise God, who is building His Church, and in love, purges and sanctifies it.

During the month of October, we will be expanding on what the Reformation was and why it is important for the church today to know and celebrate it.
