My name is Joshua Porter. I grew up in Winnipeg, Manitoba, and just moved to Calgary this past year. My wife and I have been attending Knox Baptist since we arrived. From a young age, my parents made sure the gospel was part of our daily lives and encouraged us to build personal relationships with God.
In the past few years, I've experienced a lot of change—getting married, starting a business, moving to Calgary, and, most recently, welcoming our first child. During this time, I bounced between my church in Winnipeg, where my dad is a pastor, and a few other churches across Alberta. Knowing I would eventually settle in Calgary made it difficult to fully connect with a church, as I knew it would only be temporary.
After settling in Calgary and plugging into Knox Baptist, I knew this would be our home, especially after sharing a meal with Pastor Nino and his family. Over these past few years of building a family, growing a business, and forming new relationships, God has made it clear that we need Him at the center of our lives.
Today, I am being baptized to publicly profess my faith in Jesus Christ and to commit myself to trusting and following Him.
It’s so beautiful the way God gathers people together to ‘build His church’. Josh’s testimony brings to mind the words of Jesus, “I will build my church and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.” Matthew 16:18
We’re all being built up into ‘a royal priesthood, a holy nation, His own special people’. 1 Peter 2:9
